Overview

NOTE: This page is a work-in-progress. iSeries printing is a massive topic and the knowledge purveyed throughout the following sections are based on a select few instructive experiences setting up new printers and print servers.

There are two main methods of setting up printers on IBM i. The first uses Remote Out Queues, the second uses Device Descriptions. The former method is considered the legacy/older method, although it is more likely to work. The latter method however, is much simpler to set up and maintain.

Printer Setup

Remote out queues (RMTOUTQ)

The name is self-explanatory. Instead of "writing" to a local OUTQ on the IBM i, a file can be sent to a printer set up as a remote OUTQ.

Device description

To be cleaned up.. This is the preferred way to set up a network-attached printer.

Device descriptions do not only apply to printers - they are how ethernet adapters, tape drives etc. are seen by the IBM i. Read about device descriptions Device descriptions. Regarding printer device descriptions,

  • CRTDEVPRT, F4 to enter options
  • Enter printer name as the device description, device class *LAN
  • Device type is 3812
  • Device model is 1
