Rational Developer for i (RDi) is a programming IDE used for developing software on IBM i. Its importance beyond being a great programming tool is that it represents the modern way of interacting with source code on the i, replacing the green screen utilities PDM and SEU, which are favored by traditional programmers. Besides being able to more easily browse code, there are many other advantages to developing on a GUI program, all of which quickly becomes evident after using it. A single license to the RPG variant of RDi (allows for RPG/CL development) was acquired in 2016, and is activated/installed on NORWINU1.

Note: While the term RDi will be used here, the program has undergone many name changes throughout its history, much like the OS that it's built for - IBM i. In the past, it's been known as Rational Developer Tools, Rational Developer for Power, and WebSphere Development Studio.

=Tips for using RDi=

==Initial Library List==
It is important to have your library list properly configured when using RDi, and especially when compiling programs; any external file descriptions and other dependencies that fall outside of your library list will cause the compile to error out. This only has to be set up once, after which the list will automatically be configured each time you open RDi. The steps are as follows:

* Open up a green screen and get into either ASW or Extensions menus.
* Display your library list by entering DSPLIBL.
* In RDi, right click on Objects, and select Properties.
* Navigate to 'Initial Library List'.
* Using the library list displayed on the green screen, add each entry one by one. Click Save.
* Restart RDi.

When you log on to an interactive session and enter ASW or Extensions, a command is called to load up your library list. This is not done when you log on to RDi, which is why this step/configuration is required.
