Steps

Configure basic printer settings

  • Unbox, power on, and network the device.
  • Access the web GUI, fill out device information (name, location, SNMP).
  • Set static IP and other network settings (DNS, gateway etc.). Use an IP within the range for printers (check DNS server or do a network scan). Use Colosoft to scan the network for acceptable IP range. Confirm selection of IP address with nslookup. Leave Netmask and gateway unchanged.
  • Give the device a hostname, using the convention (check DNS server for current printer names).
  • Register the hostname in DNS (domain controllers, or MMC).

Set device up as a printer on Lucy

  • Printers that will be used primarily for IBM i printing (i.e. invoice printers) need to be defined on lucy.unipharm.local, as that is where JetForm is installed). Define a printer share here. Follow the naming convention for the device/printer/share name because IBM i has a 10-character limit.

Set device up as an IBM i network printer

  • Follow IBM i instructions for setting up a printer as a device description (of type 3812). This should be done using the CRTDEVD command. Important parameters to note are the manufacturer type/model, the host name, and device description type etc. This page will indicate which printer protocol to use, most likely IPP or SNMP (this page is for Lexmark but there are similar pages for other printer manufacturers).
  • Remember to vary on the device and start the printer writer (STRPRTWTR printer name).
  • Test print from IBM i using WRKSPLF and changing the printer on a 1-pager. You may receive a QSYSOPR message such as this when trying to print, in which case you can reply with 'I' to ignore.
Load form type '*STD' device L90INV22A writer L90INV22A.

Set device up as an ASW printer

  • Log in to ASW.
  • Go to System Management -> System setup -> Printer control tasks -> Work with Jetform printers.
  • F6 to add, enter the device name as configured everywhere else (the 10-character-limit name).
