Information Systems:VMware Upgrade - December 2020

This page contains notes on the version upgrade performed on the virtual infrastructure. Specifically:

  • vCenter - 6.5 to 7.0.1
  • ESXi 6.5.0 to 7.0U3

vCenter notes

  • Verified that the hardware of the 3 servers hosts are listed on VMware compatibility list for 7.0U1. Therefore, the result remains a supported configuration. Not sure how much longer we have with this (usually they cut it off at some point), but vSphere 7 appears to be a LTS/major release (long-term support), so we're still in a good place age-wise (of the server hardware).
  • vCenter upgraded using UI installer on lab-pc. In-place upgrade performed.
  • Pre-check error was produced initially: NTP of vCenter had old domain controllers. Had to edit /etc/ntp.conf in command line (start bash in vsphere-cli on the appliance, edit with vi).
  • VCSA virtual disk was set to be thin-provisioned (thick-provisioned prior to this).

ESXi upgrade notes

  • Used new installation method - Lifecycle Manager. Did not have physical media prepared or plugged in so the introduction of this software/feature in v7 (actually v6.7) was a timely and welcomed surprise.
  • Prepared new baseline for the upgrade.

Other notes

  • Wiki on smithers redirected to owl, article differential migrated manually.
  • Smithers VM RAM allotment resized to 8GB from 16GB.
