Information Systems:WAN connections at uniPHARM
uniPHARM's primary internet connection is "Business Fibre" from Telus. The service is 20MB up/down/synchronous and the cost is about $1500 per month on an automatically renewed 3 year contract. The fibre-optic wire comes from the street pole and goes under the caul-de-sac inside conduit that exits in the Electrical Room on the first floor office area. The street fibre cable plugs into a distribution box in the Electrical Room. From there it is run through the warehouse shipping and precursor areas up to the second floor office mezzanine and finally into the Server Room. The fibre cable is yellow in colour with orange "Property of Telus" tags. The demarcation point for the fibre connection is in the Server Room, which means that up to that point, its the responsibility of Telus to make repairs as it is their property.
The demarcation point in the Server Room is the blue Juniper switch that takes the fibre cable and outputs an Ethernet cable which we then plug into our firewall. uniPHARM staff do not have access to the Juniper switch because it is poroperty of Telus. The Business Fibre service is monitored for uptime at the Juniper switch which also has an analog telephone modem to provide backdoor access to the switch.
The phone number for reporting problems with the Business Fibre connection is 1-800-268-2099 and the CSID is 1372309 and the circuit name is RCMDBC01-UWDL02. If the fibre cable is cut or non-functional, Telus does have cell phone numbers for uniPHARM I.S. staff but do not rely on them to call us.
uniPHARM's secondary internet connection is a wireless service from Terago using directional microwave radio. The antenna on the building roof is pointed to an endpoint on a tall hotel 8 kilometres due west. The wireless service is 5MB burstable. The demarcation point for this connection is also in the network rack in the Server Room with an Ethernet handoff that plugs into the firewall.
