Mini projects

  • Test Gauss in Windows 10 environment

completed by Norwin

Covered

  • We discussed how the Telus Fibre/LTE and Shaw connections work and how they plug into the switches and firewall
  • We covered how the network switches are arranged and how they connect to each other plus the recent changes that Digitel helped us with
  • We covered all the physical servers in the Server Room including how to handle them in a safe manner plus the UPSs in the Server Room
  • We covered the Power8 hardware and how it is different from x86 hardware
  • We spent a couple of hours talking about tapes and Aaron did the tape exchange 3 times during knowledge transfer
  • We reviewed how to use the BackupExec software and how to restore files from a tape
  • We reviewed how to restore a deleted or changed file on the SuperServer from shadow copies
  • We reviewed how to use the Barracuda website and Aaron did the spam clear out for 3 mornings
  • We reviewed all spare laser printers, label printers and spare desktops plus other supplies in the IT Cage and the Playroom on the 2nd floor
  • We did a basic review of how the RF Guns work - Norwin can go into further detail
  • We did a detailed walk around of the warehouse area so that Aaron knows where all the picking stations are plus where everyone is in the office areas
  • We covered how the Xerox copiers are used by staff and how to un-jam them and how to call Xerox for consumables and support
  • We spent a couple of hours on Domino/Notes and Aaron does understand the concepts but this topic is an area of weakness so he will need to use Domino support more often than myself or Norwin - if Domino goes away at some point next year this becomes a non-problem
  • We spent time reviewing the features and functions of the Sophos firewall - this is another area of weakness for Aaron but day to day changes on the firewall are rare. He was shown how to add web filter exceptions with Simon's request on Tuesday as an example
  • We covered how to reboot the server that houses the Toshiba ACD queue - again with the implementation of new phones this re-occurring task can be eliminated
  • We practiced re-imaging a spare desktop and Aaron has done this before so good proficiency with that topic
  • We practiced creating a new blank virtual machine in our VMware environment and again Aaron had some prior exposure to this kind of technology from his course work
  • We covered how to create a new Adecco user from Infonet and how to create a new UWD staff member
  • A short amount of time was dedicated to vendors and other 3rd party providers so there is some familiarity. We also covered the Teamup calendar and the wiki and Zabbix and SpiceWorks and he is able to find answers to technical questions using the resources we have created
