Overview

To keep system backups within a certain time window, and to help keep the system clean, disk usage will be periodically analyzed and unneeded files will be deleted. This document serves as a log for these endeavors.

Log

June 2017

  • Objects in lib RESTORE deleted (Sheila used this library to restore objects from tape 9999 for troubleshooting/dev purposes). ~5GB Deleted.
  • /fixes IFS folder marked to be deleted upon confirmation from Miles. 44GB of OS isos from initial installation of IBM 7.1/7.2 on Power 8. Deleted.
  • Lib BALBOA to be deleted upon further analysis and confirmation. Left this. Whatever.
  • Inquire about growth of lib QUSRBRM, now at 55GB. This is a meta library of sorts to keep track of all the operations BRMS does at the object level (I think this is how for every object, you're able to see when it was last saved). Regardless, 55GB of meta files should be asked about. Investigated but not much wiggle room here. 35 days of retention data due to our tape rotation means a lot of metadata has to be saved. Ran reorg on metadata file as per an IBM article's recommendation.
  • Libs SHEILA, SHEILA1, SHEILA2, and SHEILA4 total to around 4.5GB. Not necessary to delete per se, but perhaps can be excluded from the daily backup as these files will not change. Deleted larger objects in these libraries.
  • Lib TLAWORK installed by Gordian, very small but likely used for a temporary purpose and not cleaned up. No action.
  • Libs QPFRD54001, QPFRD71001, QPFRD72001 total to about 3.5GB. These appear to be performance collector data that may be able to be deleted upon confirmation from IBM. Deleted QPFRD54001 and QPFRD71001.
  • Lib QSPL is 9GB. Obviously this file cannot be deleted directly, but a spool file cleanup is required. Cleared QPRINT OUTQ, likely the majority of QSPL size.
  • Lib PMR82463 and POWER8NEW may also be deletable. Deleted PMR82463, left POWER8NEW.
  • Lib QMPGDATA is 3GB, a purge of MPG data (cutting off past a certain date) may shrink this.
  • Oddly enough, QWEBQRY76 (a DB2 Web Query for i library) is installed and displays a last used date of Jun, 2017 (so it's active). But we don't have this product...
  • There are large tables that Sheila backed up right before instituting the change to delete old pick lists. SROORSPLB1, PLDETL.B2, and ATLARCHPBA etc. amount to almost 30GB. Kept these but deleted their copies in PL. We don't need development copies of backup files on the system.

November 2019

  • Daily pushed up about 10-15 minutes after PTFs. Permanently applying them did not help.
  • Monthly backup did not finish in time, batch timer kicked in.
