TekTerm Server
History preamble: Prior to December 2016, the controller was in the form of a hardware appliance (model 9510) sold and supported by Psion. It was a very simple server comprising commodity parts, bundled with Windows 2000/2003 Embedded, and with the TekTerm server software installed. The server software installed on the appliance was the same as the standalone software offered today, except that the hardware and OS limited the installation to a very old version. Both hardware appliance controllers are now no longer used in production and are permanently powered off as of September 2018.
TekTerm Server is a session controller software that acts as a proxy for terminal emulation connections (on the RF guns) to the IBM i. That is, the RF guns are configured to communicate with the controller, not with the i directly. This enables session persistence, decoupling the connection state of the green screen session from the power state of the RF gun. The RF gun can be turned off, briefly lose signal, or be rebooted, and upon opening TekTerm, the green screen session can be resumed. Needless to say, TekTerm Server is a critical component for the operation of the RF guns.
Technical configuration
TekTerm Server is installed on Lucy. It runs on port 8008.
